Who would have thought that 2020 will be the year of chaos and disaster? Each one of us experienced the effect of pandemic crisis especially those who are in the economy industry, medical sector, and Men in uniform. There are people who amidst the lockdown and the stay-at-home mandate, still opted to go to work because they are the chosen ones who are called “The Immortals”. These are the people who risk their lives just to make sure the community is safe and giving service wholeheartedly because not only that they are paid to do it but It is in their oath to serve humanity. But what if those people who guard the ship drowned? Who will save them? Is the ship worth fighting for?

THE FEAR OF THE UNKNOWN

I was once one of “The Immortals” who serve the community in our province. And unfortunately, I got positive. Yes! You read it right. It was one of my worst nightmares. And I realize that It would be better for me to stay on the ship and be with my family rather than drowned and be forgotten. I am the breadwinner of the family, so I must take good care of myself for them. Sacrificing myself for the sake of the community will not save my family but be a burden to them. I fear that one of them will be vulnerable because of me. I am asthmatic and because of my depleted immune system, I got the virus. One can't deny the fact that in my line of work, there is a big possibility that sooner or later, I can be infected. I was a medical frontliner who caters to symptomatic and asymptomatic clients in the community, so there are times that I assisted probable and suspected COVID-19 clients. Also, I was able to have my duty in the Isolation facility where all positive clients are admitted. I was devastated and depressed back then. There were nights in the quarantine facility that I cry myself to sleep. I had no appetite and my body aches. I was thinking about the condition of my family who is quarantined also, they are not allowed to go out for 2 weeks.

And the worst, many people discriminated against all positive individuals in our province. They said it was all our fault why we got positive. They took us for granted and treat us like we have the worst disease. Even my neighbors don't want to be near me because I have the virus. My experience as a COVID patient made me realize that even the mightiest hero will fall and breakdown. After 21 days in the Isolation Facility, I resume my work as a Community Health Nurse. But the fear was still there, the drive and passion fade away like fireflies at dawn. My Mental Health and Physical exhaustion consume me in the dark.
